As someone who has spent a significant part of my life playing Minecraft, I was very excited when it was announced that a Minecraft movie was going to be made. All the memories of spending time on the game with my family and friends came back to me as I felt a wave of nostalgia.
When the first Minecraft movie teaser was released in 2024, I was left feeling disappointed with how everything looked. I didn’t necessarily like animation of the mobs— animals and monsters—, how the look of the setting looked, and the basic nature of the plot. This caused my excitement and interest for the film to fall off.
On April 4th, 2025, “A Minecraft Movie” was released in theaters and has since then grossed $382,539,751 according to boxofficemojo.
Initially, I was only going to watch the movie because I knew it probably wasn’t going to be the greatest, however, the audience reaction to the film drew me in and made me excited to see the film again.
The movie follows brother and sister duo Henry and Natalie — played by Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Emma Myers — as they adjust moving into a new city. We are then introduced to real estate agent Dawn, played by Danielle Brooks, and Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, played by Jason Momoa.
Out of all the characters, my favorite has to be Garrett. His personality stood out to me, and the comedic timing and line delivery of his jokes made them amusing. I also enjoyed Steve and Henry’s characters and their storylines. However, there was one issue that I had with the characters and that is how the movie handled its characters, Natalie and Dawn.
I found both Natalie and Dawn’s interesting, however, they weren’t shown as much. I like the scene when they were fighting mobs however, I wish their characters and storylines were highlighted more, especially their journey as they traveled to the Woodland Mansion.
In regard to the mobs, I initially did not like their appearance in the movie as I had an attachment to their appearance in the game. Over time though, I started to accept the look, and it grew on me.
Another visual aspect that I would like to mention is the green screen. During some instances the green screen was obvious, leading to my attention being more focused on that instead of what was actually happening in the scene such as when Natalie and Dawn were discussing how to get to the Woodland Mansion.
I also wish think that the the over-world was a little bit plain-looking, and wish had more character such as more grass, trees, or even different biomes.
Overall, the Minecraft movie was enjoyable and kept me entertained throughout the whole experience. I really appreciated the sense of community that came with watching the film as I experienced the different audience reactions.
I would give “A Minecraft Movie” a rating of 3 out of 5 diamonds.
