Mike Gundy, former head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team, was fired on September 23 shortly after reaffirming his intention to remain with the program for the foreseeable future the day prior.
Gundy, who led the Cowboys for over 21 seasons at the time of his firing, was dismissed after a 1-2 start to the season, including lopsided 69-3 loss to Oregon and a 19-12 loss to Tulsa: their first to the Golden Hurricane since 1998, and their first loss at home to them since 1951.
According to Jim Hess, Oklahoma State’s president, the decision was “about what’s best for our football program, our student-athletes and Oklahoma State University and it reflects our unwavering commitment to championship-level football and competing for national success.”
During his tenure, Gundy led the Cowboys to eight 10-win seasons, four Big 12 title game appearances, and a final ranking of No. 3 in the 2011 AP Top 25 poll.
But recent years have not been so successful: The Cowboys went 3-9 in 2024, with no wins in conference play; alongside a bad start to the current season.
According to ESPN, offensive coordinator Doug Meacham has been named interim head coach through the end of the 2025 season.
