Last week, there were many homecoming festivities celebrated throughout Westview High School, one of those being Girls on the Gridiron. Girls on the Gridiron is an opportunity for sophomore, junior and senior girls to come together to play football as a team.
2025 Girls on the Gridiron is different than past years due to the fact that the sophomore class was involved as well. Last Thursday, there were two different games played. Sophomores versus Juniors at 5:00 and Junior versus Seniors at 6:00.

In preparation for the games, the players and coaches got together many times over the course of September after school and on the weekends.
Zach Babic, 12, was in charge of offensive coaching for the senior team. Specifically, he helped to coach the quarterback because he is a quarterback himself. He chose to coach this year as an opportunity to bond with his fellow coaches and have fun as a coach and ensure the girls have fun themselves.
“Make sure the girls have fun because that is the main goal and if they’re having fun then we’ll win,” Babic said.
At practice, players worked on learning the basics of football with both offense and defense.
“The big thing for offense is having them learn how to catch the football,” Babic explained.
Babic felt as though the seniors had taken well to learning the game and said that seniors even came up with some of the plays themselves.
Kalyn Bailey, 11, played for the Junior team as wide receiver. Before the game, she said she was feeling hyped and ready to go.
“I’m feeling excited, motivated, and I’m gonna have fun,” Bailey said.
Macy Kellner, 12, was excited to be quarterback and safety for the Senior team. She has described practices as more casual, except for when the opposing team comes around.
“When the juniors come around, it gets a little crazy,” Kellner said.
She felt like practices were a great chance for her to run through plays and get to know more about football but also get to know her teammates better.
After many practices, the Girls on the Gridiron game was hosted. Not only did the female football players practice, football players and other boys had the chance to be cheerleaders. This group stood and cheered for the girls as they played in these two games and also performed at halftime.
In the end, the Sophomores beat the Juniors with a score of 46-20. The Senior and Junior game consisted of a lot of impressive offense from both teams, with a final score of Seniors winning at 42-28.
As with all homecoming festivities last week, this was a chance for students to come together to make memories.
