Team USA members played in their last PGA tournament, the Procore Championship, September 11-14 in preparation for next week’s Ryder Cup.
The Ryder Cup is twelve of America’s best players versus twelve of Europe’s best players. They play in pairs and do match play, where whoever wins the most individual holes wins the match and earns a point for their team. The team that gets to 14.5 points first wins the cup.
The U.S leads the event all-time with 27 victories to Europe’s 15. Players take pride in playing for their country and representing it at the highest level.
The Ryder Cup is played every two years, and in 2023 it was played in Rome. Europe beat the U.S by 3 points. The U.S is taking the event much more seriously and is out for revenge.
Team USA Captain, Keegan Bradley, was in attendance this week in Napa, CA, watching his team play.
There were two team USA members not in attendance this week at the Procore Championship for various reasons. LIV’s Bryson Dechambeau was ineligible for the event due to his affiliation with the LIV golf tour. Xander Schauffle was not there because of the birth of his first child.
Of the seven members of the team that did participate in the Procore Championship, the number one ranked Scottie Scheffler earned his sixth victory of the season, scoring –19 under over the four-day tournament. This means that he shot 19 shots under par or average.
Following right behind Scheffler, rising star Ben Griffin shot an –18 under.
The rest of the team finished as follows, J.J Spaun: sixth place, Cameron Young: tied ninth place, Sam Burns: tied thirteenth place, Russell Henley: tied nineteenth place, Patrick Cantlay: tied thirtieth place, Harris English and Colin Morikawa: tied forty-third, Justin Thomas: sixty-ninth.
Playing in this event will prepare them for the Ryder Cup, and a more serious approach is being seen compared to last year’s team did not play in any events leading up to the Ryder Cup.
“It would be unusual for me to have four or five weeks off before the Masters or the U.S. Open or something like that, so there’s no reason that I should be doing that going into the Ryder Cup,” Scottie Scheffler said about the extra practice.
After Scheffler’s victory, all attention shifted to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. Bethpage State Park Golf Course, known for its extremely difficult black course, is where the Ryder Cup is being hosted, which gives the U.S the home field advantage over Europe.
