While looking for something to watch I came across the VMAs, and I am glad I stayed to watch it. As celebrities gather at the VMAs every year for this year, it was hosted on September 7. It took place at UBS arena in Elmont, New York. There were many recognizable faces that attended this event.
Over 100 artists were nominated in different categories. There were many amazing performances this year. But three of them stood out to me.
Starting off with Katseye performing their hit songs Gnarly and Gabriela. They had stable and great singing while dancing. I love the outfits they wore. It matched the music perfectly. All the members were great, especially since it is their first ever VMA performance.
Another artist, Tate McRae started her performance with “Revolving Door” then transitioned to “Sports Car.” Her singing was smooth, and she had a strong voice. McRae and her backup dancers were spectacular. They all had sharp and mesmerizing movements. Her performance was inspired by Medusa.
Another singer, Sabrina Carpenter performed her latest single, “Tears” from her album Man’s Best Friend. During her dance break Carpenter paid tribute to Britney Spears by performing with water (which represented rain) falling on her and the dancers. Then her dancers were holding up signs that were supporting LGBTQ+. Some of the signs said, “Love each other,” “Protect trans right,” and “Support drag.”
For the winners of the categories, I almost entirely agreed with all of them. Here are some of the winners I agree with:
Best Latin: Shakira- “Soltera.”
Best pop: Ariana Grande- “Brighter Days Ahead.”
MTV push performance of the year: Katseye- Touch
I really cherished all the songs that won because of how their voices complimented the song. It fit perfectly for them. They have such a unique and distinct voice. So, I am glad they won these categories.
Some winners I have mixed feeling with were Best collaboration, Song of the year, and Best hip-hop. While I think the artists that won these categories are great. There are some songs that are a bit better or are a close second.
For best collaboration, I love “Die with a smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars because of how they harmonize great together. But “Luther” is a really close second for me. Kendrick and SZA did a wonderful job with the song. Everything lined up perfectly.
Song of the year I think “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish should have won. “APT” by Rosé and Bruno Mars was a catchy song. But “Birds of a Feather” was a hit song last year.
Best hip-hop went to “Anxiety” by Doechii. I think “Nokia” by Drake, “Somebody save me” by Eminem feat. Jelly Roll, or “Not Like US” by Kendrick Lamar should have won. These songs appealed to me more than “Anxiety” did. Doechii has some good songs, but “Anxiety” is not the best.
Overall, the VMAs this year were amazing. All the artists did great and worked hard to get where they are today. While I did not agree with all the winners this year, it was worth watching.
