On Friday, Sept. 19, Westview’s Varsity football team traveled to Prairie Wind Elementary as a part of a newly-created tradition between the two schools.
Every Friday since September 5, a different Westview athletic team has visited the school to spread hype for the elementary students. So far, the football, cross country, volleyball and softball teams have come to Prairie Wind.
The athletes stand on both sides of the sidewalk outside of the cafeteria doors, where students enter. When students start arriving, the players stick out their hands and high five them as they walk into the building.
The football team shouted encouraging words to the elementary kids to get them pumped up for the school day. Questions like “Are you excited for school today?” “You look so good today” made the students smile and feel acknowledged.
Some students walked up to the school with a frown or some tears, but their expression completely changed when they saw the football players, role models for many, rooting for them and showing their support.
Kellen Ivey, 12, said that he knows the impact that High Five Fridays have on younger kids.
“I remember as a kid looking up to high schoolers so much and thinking they were so cool. I saw them at a football game and was like wow. I think this is definitely something that the kids look forward to, seeing their role models supporting and encouraging them,” said Ivey.
Only certain members of the team were chosen to go.
“I think we chose people that weren’t only available, but also ones we all respect and think are leaders. I would like to thank my coaches for setting this experience up and letting us do this,” said Ivey.
Certain Prairie Wind staff members such as Deborah Duncan, an English Learning teacher, were watching the event and helping lead kids up towards the entrance. Duncan appreciates High Five Fridays for the relationships and sense of worth it creates.
“When they see that older students care for them, it fosters a sense of belonging and community,” said Duncan
High Five Fridays helped create a more even balance of fun and learning. Kids now start off their Friday by being excited and carrying that excitement to the classroom, helping them get ready and be confident to learn.
“It really makes me feel good because I like seeing people out there supporting me at the beginning of my day, like it puts me in a good mood to start the rest of my day,” said Prairie Wind student Melissa Abbi, 5.
Westview will continue to send sports teams to Prairie Wind every Friday and continue this line of support for elementary schoolers.
