On January 6 2024, history was made again at Westview High School, the first official in-school signing to college. Yuliana Corazón has signed to College of Saint Mary for soccer recruitment with early education as a major.
Corazón wanted to stay close to home knowing that tuition is more expensive going out of state, but not too close to home, wanting the experience of living in a dorm. At the College of Saint Mary, Corazón will be continuing soccer for the next four years and has the hopes of going professional either indoor or outdoor.
Signings to college are destined to have hard and emotional aspects to it.
“The hardest part about signing is knowing where you want to go because as soon as you sign that’s where you will be going for the next four years. It will be harder to transfer is you are in sports and signing for a sport,” Corazón said.
Committing to her chosen college was important to Corazón since she is the first to ever sign and continue soccer within her family. Corazón’s feelings of gratitude towards her family push her to follow the passion that she’s had since she was 5-6 years old. The most challenging time in Corazón’s career was her freshman year, where she had an ACL injury.
On April 12 2022, during a game, Corazón tore her ACL. Most people who see an athlete with an ACL injury assume that it will be the end of their career. Corazón wanted to prove that she could come back, and better than ever.
“I didn’t let that happen and used it as motivation for me to prove to people that I can still continue my career even after an injury that should have stopped me but didn’t,” Corazón said.
After a year in recovery, in April 2023 Corazón was cleared to play again. On the field, Corazón did exactly what she came back to prove. The Westview Girls Soccer team ended their season 7-10.
