September 9, Westview High Reserve Football played their second game of the season against Burke High. The game was tight down to the very last play, ending in a score of 13-6 Westview.
In the first half, both teams were held to a stalemate. Neither team could find the end zone because of the instant pressure put on by both defensive lines.
The half also consisted of a catalogue of turnovers. From fumbles on the edge to dropped snaps to intercepted passes, the first half had it all.
Once they reached the second half, Burke came out strong, driving down the field and scoring a touchdown, making the score 6-0.
After a few more drives, Westview answered with a pass touchdown to Kael Beutler, 10, and secured the extra point for the 7-6 lead.
After a Westview touchdown, both teams’ offenses were held to a halt by the strong defenses.
“Even though our offense struggled later on, our defense held together, and we played as a team,” Inside linebacker Jack Peterson, 10, said.
It looked like the score would hold 7-6 until the last five seconds of the game when Burke brought it down to Westview’s one yard line.
With the last play of the game, Burke knocking on the door, Beutler recovered Burke’s fumbled snap and returned it 99 yards for the game-securing touchdown.
“It was very heart racing knowing that I had secured the win for the team off of one play,” Beutler said.
The Reserve Wolverines are now 1-1 and face Bellevue East next week.
