T’Mya Jackson dances her way onto Westview Drill Team
T’Mya Jackson, 10, is on the Westview Drill Team. The Westview Drill Team is similar to cheer and dance. It requires dancers to have sharp and specific movements.
“Drill team is like a dance for diversity. You basically have to show you’re talent, hard work, and dedication,” Jackson said.
“I like the form of Drill Team dancing and the Burke drill team inspired me to join,” Jackson said.
The Drill Team, consisting of 15 dancers, performs at all home games for girls and boys during halftime. The Drill Team’s season doesn’t end until basketball season is over.
“I have enjoyed the people I have met and the bonds I am creating through Drill Team,” Jackson said.
The practices are every day from 3:20-5:00, and they mostly work on choreographing their step routine.
“Mrs.Olsen is the team coach. She is a good coach. It is her first year as a Drill Team coach, so she is still learning things,” Jackson said.
Coach Olsen has a history in dance. It’s her first year coaching any drill team. Lots of the Drill Team’s inspiration comes from YouTube, TikTok, or girls who have been on different Drill Teams in past years.
“I’m excited to watch this team perform most schools don’t have a Drill Team. I think these girls are very talented and will do great this is basketball season,” said Olsen.
