Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) has taken over Westview as of late. Whenever you go to lunch, you will see the JROTC handing out flyers or marching around the school. However, the things happening in the JROTC room are left often to be a mystery with the general student population.
Andrew Harwick, 11, has gone through his daily routine when he enters the JROTC room.
“We stand in a big rectangle, and we will recite the cadet creed,” Andrew said. The cadet creed is a statement that promotes patriotism and the honor of living by the Cadet Honor Code.
After announcements from the teaching leaders from JROTC, they go into their respective teams. There are many teams in JROTC that you can be part of. In Harwick’s case, he participates in marksmanship.
In marksmanship, students will go to the range and participate in shooting different targets. For the first semester, you will shoot the targets with a rifle and for the second semester, you will shoot the targets with a bow and arrow.
In order to progress through the rankings, students must do well on the team and in the students’ schoolwork.
Due to these reasons, many people participate in JROTC yearly. JROTC also offers P.E. credits for their members. These reasons are why JROTC has become an integral part of daily life at Westview.
