The WNBA season is in full swing with the first official games of the season having been played on May 8th.
After becoming back-to-back champions last season, the Las Vegas Aces opened their season against the Phoenix Mercury. The Aces retained most of the players that were a part of the 2025 championship team, with the only key departure being Kelsey Plum who signed with the Los Angeles Sparks.
However, the Aces struggled in this game, losing to the Mercury 66-99. After this game, the Aces have seemed to figure some things out offensively, winning their next four. This includes a game against Kelsey Plum and the Sparks. Las Vegas is now at the top of the Western Conference with the Golden State Valkyries behind them by two wins.
The WNBA has also added two new expansion teams to the league this year, the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo. Both teams have started their season well, with the Tempo beating talented Sparks and Mercury teams to be 3-1 and the Fire beating the Phoenix Sun by 1.
The Chicago Sky recently lost a key member of their team in Rickea Jackson, who will miss the remainder of the season. She tore her ACL in a game against the Minnesota Lynx and will have to undergo surgery. The Sky sit at the top of the Eastern Conference, but losing Jackson may significantly alter how they run their offense and the physicality of the defense.
The season is far from over, and the league is always full of surprises.
