I am a sucker for a good romantic comedy and this had me giggling and kicking my feet.
A new rom com “People We Meet on Vacation,” based on the book by Emily Henry, came out on Netflix on January 9.
It easily rose to 17.2 million views in the first view days, and then reached “Top 10 movies in the U.S. Today” by January 14.
I absolutely loved the way this movie was conveyed, the actors cast portrayed the characters based off the book very accurately, the plot was beautiful, and the love confessions at the end pulled on all the heart strings.
The movie felt warm, yet deeply meaningful with Poppy’s realization that home is not just a place, it can also be a person. Poppy realized, after years of traveling, that she couldn’t find a specific place to call her home because she felt like she couldn’t belong there without being “too much” for people.
Somewhere along the way, she realized that home had less to do with where she was, and more to do with how she felt and who she was with.
It is a gentle, funny, and emotional movie that lingers in your mind, even after the credits roll.
The thing that made this movie stand out the most to me was how the writers emphasized the vulnerability between Poppy and Alex.
The dynamic of their relationship really stood out to me because they didn’t have to be the couple that always have grand gestures. They were the couple that didn’t realize how much they meant to each other until they lost each other.
As a viewer, watching their story unfold as only friends in the beginning was extremely important for the build up and connection of their relationship. Both of them began to realize that love isn’t always about timing, settling, or chemistry.
It is about being honest. Even in hard times.
At the end, they both let their guard down. We see raw emotions are scary but worth speaking about.
Another reason I loved that the writers made sure that Poppy and Alex were just friends in the beginning is because even though it was platonic for years, seeing each other go through relationships with other peopleadded the tension. Even though they knew there was always something stronger, it made me really intrigued by how the feelings would end up being confessed.
Their yearly vacation felt different this time. Whatever they had been pretending not to notice started to surface.
The contrast of what both Poppy and Alex wanted in life made the confession even more powerful, revealing how love doesn’t have a timing, but a sign that you cannot ignore anymore.
To finish it off, I cannot forget to mention the soundtrack. It was definitely built for a rom-com with songs like, “Forever Your Girl” by Paula Abdul, which quickly became the theme song related to this movie on social media. Also, “Cool About It” by boygenuis, “X’s” by Cigarettes After Sex both added a somber and heavyhearted tone in solemn scenes. Lastly, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston.
Overall, I loved this movie, and I would give it a four out of five stars. I deduct one point because I have never been a big fan of movies with multiple time jumps.
