For the first time in the history of Westview High Boys Golf, a state qualifier has risen. Mason Burg, 10, placed ninth at the A3 district, earning himself a spot in the State Championship in Kearny.
Shooting a 76, Burg also achieved the lowest score in Westview Boys Golf history.
Burg started the round six over par through six holes, on pace for one of his worst rounds of the season. However, his scores took a turn from the seventh tee box to the last, shooting even par through the final 11 holes and keeping his personal best +6 score.
“As I walked up to the seventh hole, I just thought that I’d hit the best drive I could and hit it straight down the middle to start some momentum,” Burg said.
This run of 11 holes included two birdies and a pair of pars on the most difficult holes on the course. The hole difficulty scores propelled Burg to a medal and helped him clench his spot at state.
Coach Aaron Kuecker was unsure Masons score was enough to qualify, getting brought down to a tie breaker over hole difficulty.
“I was pretty excited, I didn’t really believe it until the guy said his name,” Kuecker said.
Now Burg has one week to prepare for his first ever state meet on a course he’s only played once before.
“All I can do now is keep practicing and stay confident,” Burg said.
