The Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 39-34 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Georgia came into the game heavily favored, the betting line had Ole Miss at six and a half point underdogs. On ESPN’s College Gameday, all four of the analysts picked Georgia to beat Ole Miss, a rare sweep in a competitive playoff game.
The reason for all of this doubt is that head coach Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss right before the CFP for LSU in a controversial move, leaving the coaching staff in chaos heading into the playoffs. Having to recover from Kiffin’s departure before the playoff, Ole Miss had two weeks to turn around and recovered perfectly, dominating Tulane and Georgia in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Some of the coaches followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge when he left. For example, Charlie Weis Jr, the former OC in Oxford, followed Kiffin to LSU but was granted permission to come back and call plays on offense for the Rebels in the CFP. Weis has been given high praise for his performance in the playoffs as he has also made multiple trips back to Baton Rouge for recruiting visits. Many other staff members and positional coaches left, it is very common for a coach to retain his staff, just not before the biggest games in your program’s history.
Pete Golding, on the other hand, the former DC for Ole Miss, stayed behind and was awarded the head coaching job at Ole Miss for the CFP and the 2026 season and beyond. Because he used to be the DC, Golding has been given double the responsibilities in the playoffs, being both the head coach and having to call defensive plays during the game, all while having a role in the offense as well. Golding has done well balancing these responsibilities, as his leadership has been a big part of the Rebels deep playoff run.
Another one of the main reasons behind the Ole Miss Rebels unlikely run to the playoffs is the emergence of quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss transferred to Ole Miss from a Division II school, Ferris State, where he won two National Championships with the Bulldogs before transferring to Ole Miss.
Upon his arrival in Oxford, Chambliss knew he probably wouldn’t be starting over Austin Simmons, the Ole Miss QB that had the starting job, and many questioned why he even transferred to somewhere he couldn’t play in the first place.
Everything worked out for Chambliss though, as after Simmons was injured, Trinidad was given the start against the Arkansas Razorbacks in the third game of the season. Chambliss took this opportunity and ran with it, passing for 353 yards and a touchdown while also taking over on the ground, rushing for 62 yards and two touchdowns, completely taking over the game no one expected him to start.
Chambliss’s explosive performance won his team the game, as every time Arkansas struck, Chambliss and Ole Miss seemed to answer back as the SEC showdown turned into an instant classic. Ole Miss eventually pulled away from the Razorbacks, winning 41-35 in an impressive first start for Trinidad Chambliss.
Trinidad Chambliss took full advantage of getting that start, as he kept playing at a very high level, even inserting himself into the Heisman conversation after not playing a few games. Chambliss was a Heisman caliber player the rest of the regular season. The only quarter he underperformed in was against Georgia, when he went 1/10 with 1 yard in the fourth quarter, allowing Georgia to come back from a nine-point deficit in this time.
Chambliss would later redeem himself with his clutch performance against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, the biggest game in program history. Chambliss has already announced he will be returning Oxford next year as long as he is granted a medical redshirt, giving him an extra year of eligibility.
If all things go well for this Ole Miss team, they could very well be in Miami, playing for the National Championship in a couple weeks.
With all of the controversy surrounding Lane Kiffin and the coaching staff, it is truly remarkable how Pete Golding has been able to rally his guys and keep them focused on the important game ahead. With all of the noise going on with the transfer portal and coaching carousel, the Ole Miss Rebels have stayed locked in and against all odds, find themselves as one of the final four teams in the CFP.
In what has been a very strange year for the Ole Miss football program, they could make Lane Kiffin regret his decision of ever leaving, and emerge as a college football powerhouse for years to come.
Ole Miss and Miami will face off in the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona on January 8th in a highly anticipated matchup.
