On Thursday, January 15, Stella Williams, 12, made Westview school history, becoming the first girls basketball player to score 1000 career points. She earned her 1000th career point in a win at home against Bellevue East.
Williams scored the shot that secured 1000 points during the 4th quarter with a 3, bringing the crowd to their feet with applause. Williams explained that the moment was full of excitement from teammates, coaches and fans.
“All my teammates on the court ran over and gave me high fives. The fans all stood up and parents had posters, which was fun,” Stella said.
Williams ended the evening with 21 points, going 8-for-14. Williams helped lead Westview to a win over the Bellevue East Chieftains 83-5.
She has played varsity basketball for the last 4 years, starting her freshman year. She has worked hard to get 1000 points, earning an average of about 250 points per year.
Williams explained that in the process of getting 1000 points, she owes a lot to her teammates.
“Very few of the 1000 points were created by myself. Most of them were assists,” Williams said.
Along with supportive teammates, Williams is grateful for her coaches over the years.
“Coaches have instilled a lot of confidence in me and allowed me to take the shots that I want, so I never have to worry if I should be shooting or not,” Williams said.
Because she was the first girl’s basketball player to score 1000 points, she is grateful for the chance to make a meaningful impact on the program.
“I just love this program and so to contribute to that is really cool,” Williams said.
As for Stella’s future, she hopes to win state as a team and finish the season strong.
“Stay confident and work hard because it doesn’t happen by accident,” Williams said.
