Tension in Minnesota has increased these past few weeks due to problems with U.S. immigration and customs enforcement (ICE). Many incidents have been reported within the state.
Renée Nicole Good
Jan. 7, Renée Nicole Good, 37, who was a wife and a mother of three was shot and killed by an ICE agent.
It took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Good was attempting to drive away from the agents when she was shot by Jonathan Ross. The Trump Administration called Good a “domestic terrorist” since she allegedly tried to run over the officer with her car. People on the internet are split between if she was trying to run him over or trying to drive away.
Alex Pretti
Jan. 24, 2026, Alex Pretti, 37, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents. It took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Pretti was an ICU nurse who worked with Veterans. He was attempting to help a bystander that was pushed by ICE agents when the agents interfered and pinned him down to the ground. They noticed Pretti had a gun on him and took it away before shooting him multiple times. This was according to ABC News.
Pretti was a licensed gun owner. In the state of Minnesota, it is legal to carry a gun if you have a permit.
Officials in the Trump administration said the agents shot Pretti as self defense. Calling Pretti a “domestic terrorist” and calling the agents the victims.
Types of tactics used before
There have been cases where ICE agents used kids to get their parents detained. Recently in Minnesota an agent told five-year-old Liam Ramos to knock on the door of his home so the agents could detain his dad. On Jan.31 a judge ordered to release Ramos and his father from the detention center they were held at. They returned home the next day.
Another tactic is ICE agents pretending to be local police officers. They make up fake stories to try and lure people out their homes and/ or give up personal information. This was according to ImmigrationDefense Project.
Impacts on Minnesota
There has been many protests around the country protesting ICE activities in Minnesota. Many people do not feel safe anymore, which caused public schools in Minneapolis (MPS) to close for the rest of the week due to the killing of Good and the safety of the students.
There have been reports of ICE agents being outside of schools and detaining people.
School districts in Minnesota are giving the option of doing virtual learning due to students not feeling safe to go to school because of ICE agents.
According to North Star Policy Action if ICE continues to stay in Minnesota, the economy can have a major impact since many people are scared to leave their homes. Even citizens are frightened due to the violence being caused by the agents.
On Jan. 12, Minnesota announced that they are suing the Trump administration, which will be held in federal courts within the state.
The reason for this is because of peace being disturbed, causing fear, and stating the “Operation Metro Surge” is unconstitutional, saying it is against the first and tenth amendment. According to City of Minneapolis, “The State and the cities allege the surge amounts to a violation of the First and Tenth Amendments of the Constitution, as well as the Constitution’s guarantee of equal sovereignty between state and federal governments.”
Back in May of 2025 a memo allowed ICE agents into people’s home with an administrative warrant. Normally ICE agents would need a warrant signed by a judge.
If an ICE agent tries to enter your home without a warrant you have the right to not allow entry. If they enter without consent, you have the right to remain silent. ICE agents entering your home is against the fourth amendment, which is the right to the people not allowing unreasonable searches and seizures without a warrant signed by a judge.
