Taylor Swift’s album falls short

I’ve never been incredibly interested in Taylor Swift’s music. Don’t get me wrong “August” is one of my favorites, but I’ve never felt drawn to her.

So I thought maybe I could give her new album a chance.

But it was extremely hard for me to get through.

On Swift’s new album “Midnights,” there are 13 songs. After forcing myself to listen through the album, I discovered that she made an additional album with five more songs. I could not mentally handle listening to five more songs.

Swift is known for 13 being her favorite number. You can often see it pop up in her songs. Something I appreciate about Swift is her commitment to music. As a musician, I enjoy when an artist is truly in love with what they do. I think it makes it more intriguing to be a fan. You can follow along and find the Easter eggs hidden within the music and interviews.

That doesn’t mean the music is good.

For example, “Midnight Rain.” I was expecting something new with this album. I enjoy how much Swift has grown, but this song just went back to some of her other styles. The vocals in the beginning are something I’ve heard a lot from her. Swift has shown that she can put different styles of music in her albums. I was hoping for something different.

There was one song on this album that I did enjoy. “Karma”. I’m not going to lie, this song was stuck in my head for a while. I actually really liked the vibe of this song. The vocals and lyrics are fun and enjoyable. She talks about some the things she’s known for loving. For example cats.  “Sweet like honey, karma is a cat. Purring in my lap cause it loves me.” Is the best lyric in the whole album.

Though it was difficult for me to listen to, I still like some of Swifts songs. I do enjoy her old music such as Lover and Enchanted. Swift won me over with “Karma” and her love for cats, but overall I was very underwhelmed.

I don’t think I’ll be listening to the album again.
